DAY 3 – FRIDAY 9 DECEMBER 2016
PACHATUSAN, SACRED VALLEY

Picture
After breakfast, you travel through the Sacred Valley of the Incas to the majestic slopes of Apu Pachatusan - a Quechua word meaning “One who sustains the Earth”. Once there, you will visit the chapel of The Lord of Huanca, erected in 1676. This chapel commemorates the appearance of “Immanuel” at this site in the 1600’s.

This chapel also houses a stone believed to have had the image of “Immanuel” on it when it was discovered in the 1700’s. You will have an opportunity to touch this stone before visiting the two water sources near the chapel, attributed with miraculous healing properties, which are visited by thousands of pilgrims annually.

Thereafter you will have an opportunity to spend some time at this spectacular site that held firmly by Apu Pachatusan.

Later we will have lunch together, before making our way to Moray. Lunch is for your own account.

MORAY

Picture
This afternoon we visit Moray, one of the most visually stunning Inca ruins and archaeological sites just west of the village of Maras.

Moray has a series of concentric terraces that descend into a depth of approximately 150 metres and leads to a circular bottom. There are six more terraces in connected ellipses rather than perfect circles, surrounding the concentric heart of Moray. There are multiple staircases that enable people to walk from the top to the bottom.

The purpose of Moray is uncertain but the most widely agreed theory is that it was used to serve as an agricultural research station. After spending some time here, we will return to our Hotel. Dinner is for your own account.

DAY 4 - SATURDAY 10TH DECEMBER 2016
PISAC RUINS & MARKET

Picture
This morning you make your way to Pisac ruins. It sits on a looming hilltop above the modern town of Pisac and is the remains of an impressive ancient Inca settlement. Though little is known about the history of the site before the Spanish conquest, it gives the impression that it may have been part of a settlement along a vital Inca road and was used as a ceremonial and military centre. The site was abandoned and fell to ruin after the conquest in the 1530’s.

Pisac ruins contain some of the best examples of Inca ruins in existence. Alongside the vast and impressive agricultural terraces surrounding the hillside, the platform built at the top contains the remains of a temple complex and fortress. Amongst the structures seen here are the ruins of ceremonial baths, altars, fortified walls and the Temple of the Sun.

After exploring the ruins you will visit Pisac town where you can have lunch at one of the many restaurants on the square. This is for your own account.

The rest of the afternoon you have at leisure to browse the local traditional market, with its many stalls and exciting wares. This is a truly breath-taking and colourful experience!

Late afternoon you will leave Pisac and return to the hotel where you will have the evening at leisure. Dinner is for your own account.

DAY 6 - MONDAY 12TH DECEMBER 2016
OLLANTAYTAMBO RUINS & TRAIN TO AGUAS CALIENTES

Picture
Please ensure that your luggage is completely packed and ready to be taken to the Cusco Hotel, where you will collect it upon arrival.

After breakfast we leave the hotel with our backpack/overnight bag for an evening in Aguas Calientes, Machu Picchu. Please ensure that you have a bag for this purpose.

En-route we visit Ollantaytambo, a town and an Inca archaeological site some 60 km northwest of the city of Cusco. It is located at an altitude of 2,792 meters (9,160 feet) above sea level. During the Inca Empire, Ollantaytambo was the royal estate of Emperor Pachacuti who conquered and raised Ollantaytambo. He rebuilt the town with remarkable constructions and undertook extensive works of terracing and irrigation in the Urubamba Valley. These ruins are truly spectacular and attract many tourists annually. We will explore this marvellous archaeological site with its various temples, doorways and series of ceremonial fountains, etc.

Afterwards you will have time for lunch (for your own account) at one of the many restaurants in Ollantaytambo town, before our short walk to the Ollantaytambo train station, where we meet our train for Aguas Calientes, Machu Picchu. On arrival there we book into our hotel and have some time at leisure. Later we meet for dinner at our hotel (included in the tour price).

Overnight at 3* Taypikala Hotel, Aguas Calientes on a Dinner, Bed & Buffet Breakfast basis

DAY 7 – TUESDAY 13 DECEMBER 2016
MACHU PICCHU RUINS & TRAIN TO CUSCO

Picture
After early breakfast, you take the early morning bus to Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu is an Incan citadel set high in the Andes Mountains in Peru, above the Urubamba River valley. Historians believe it was built at the height of the Inca Empire that dominated western South America in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Machu Picchu’s finely crafted stonework, terraced fields and sophisticated irrigation system bear witness to the Inca civilization’s architectural, engineering and agricultural prowess. The site’s central buildings are prime examples of a masonry technique mastered by the Incas in which stones were cut to fit together without mortar. The walls, terraces, stairways and ramps blend seamlessly into its natural setting.

Machu Picchu is a place of power that is fondly known as: the Crystal City, the Rainbow City, the City of the Condor and Hummingbird, the City of Peace and the City of Light. The legendary beauty of this magnificent city defies description. Machu Picchu is without a doubt, one of the most fascinating wonders and mysterious citadels in the world. It is dramatic, mysterious and magical and is famed as the highlight of Peru. It certainly is unforgettable!  After exploring the site with Jorge and Linda, you will have some time at leisure within the site.

Later in the afternoon we meet at our hotel, collect our luggage and make our way to the train station to meet our train for Cusco. In Cusco we will transfer to our hotel.  Lunch and dinner is for your own account.

Overnight at 3* Taypikala Hotel, Cusco on Bed & Buffet Breakfast basis

DAY 8 – WEDNESDAY 14 DECEMBER 2016
TIPON

Picture
After breakfast you make your way to the Cusco side of Apu Pachatusan to explore the Tipón ruins. This Inca citadel is well hidden in the mountain above the valley and the town below. It is located on the Cusco to Puno road away from the main Cusco highlights, leaving it relatively tranquil and tourist free.

Tipón was known to be an important temple for the Incas and it was a place where they honoured the water element and performed rituals to create perfect union with the Creator and Cosmic energy.

It is a beautiful archaeological site, with well-preserved Inca terracing, fountains and finely designed water channels. It is clear that the terraces were constructed for agricultural purposes as the water channels feed the whole site with fresh water, harnessed from a natural spring near the top of the site. Some of the Incan aqueducts are still in use today.

The ruins of Tipón are not as extensive as some other Inca sites but it is beautifully designed and displays how advanced the Incas were architecturally. You will have some time here to explore Tipón before going to Piquillaqta.

PIQUILLAQTA

Picture
Piquillaqta is a national archaeological park with landscapes of great interest. It is located about 30 km South-East of Cusco and is situated higher than 3,350 meters. It covers an area of 8,453 acres and was one of the most spectacular regional centres of the Wari culture.

This vast site is interesting since it is the only ruin of a pre-Inca city in the Cusco region, and is attributed to the Wari culture that emerged in the central highlands around 1000 AD. It would appear that Piquillaqta was given its name after the arrival of the Spaniards. The name used in Inca times is unknown.

RUMICOLCA

Picture
Rumicolca was also initially constructed by the Wari (Huari) people and served as a southern entrance to and frontier of their empire.  It was once the gigantic stone gateway into the Cusco valley that served as the border checkpoint and customs post, at the Southern entrance to the Wari Empire.

The Inca enhanced the original construction of their predecessors and fortified it with Andesite. They then continued using the gateway for the same purpose as the Wari did. The gateway still stands, rearing up to twelve solid metres above the ground and are another impressive Inca construction. After exploring the site you will return to Cusco where you will have the rest of the day free.

Lunch and Dinner is for your own account.

DAY 11 - SATURDAY 17TH DECEMBER 2016
UROS FLOATING ISLANDS

Picture
Lake Titicaca is located on the border of Peru and Bolivia, about 3,811 metres above sea level, making it the highest commercially navigable lake in the world. By volume of water, it is also the largest lake in South America.

After early breakfast you make your way to Lake Titicaca’s pier and boat to the Uros floating Islands. Titicaca is notable for a population of pre-Incan people called Uros, who live on artificial islands made of floating reeds called totora. They have been living on the lake for hundreds of years and were forced to take up residence on the floating islands, when the Incas expanded onto their land.

The Uros use the totora reed, which is plentiful along the edges of the lake, to make their homes, furniture, boats and the islands they live on. Their boats are shaped like canoes but with animal heads at the prow. These islands have become a major tourist attraction, drawing excursions from the lakeside city of Puno. The Uros make their living from fishing and from selling their handicrafts to the many tourists that visit these islands.

You will have an opportunity to meet and spend some time with the local families living on these islands. They are very friendly and extremely creative, so feel free to purchase their wares.

At the right time, you will bid the families’ farewell and continue with the boat trip along Lake Titicaca to Taquile Island.

TAQUILE ISLAND

Picture
Whilst on Taquile Island, you will explore the less touristy and more scenic part of it. You will experience a ceremony with Jorge Luis here and enjoy a traditional lunch (included in the tour price), before departure and return to Puno.  You can bring your bathing suite along for a swim, weather permitting.

Once back in Puno, you transfer to your hotel where the rest of the evening is at leisure.  Dinner is for your own account.

Overnight at 3* Taypikala Lago Hotel, Chucuito on a Lunch, Bed & Buffet Breakfast basis

DAY 12 - SUNDAY 18th DECEMBER 2016
AJAYU MARKA

Picture
Ajayu Marka or the “Abode of Spirits” is situate is near the multi-dimensional doorway of Aramu Muru on the road from Puno to Copacabana.

This is a spectacular site with sandstone rock formations in the shapes of animals, human profiles and mythical creatures. Here you will walk on Mother Earth’s body towards Aramu Muru and experience this magnificent site and its ancient wisdom held within these marvellous rock formations, which are truly “out of this world”!

ARAMU MURU

Picture
From Ajayu Marka you make your way to “Puerta de Hayu Marka”. In the early 1990’s, Journey Leader Jorge Luis Delgado was exploring the Peruvian countryside, when he came across an area where the rock had been smoothed to a flat surface and adorned with a small alcove. Since its rediscovery, the doorway has become known as the multi-dimensional gateway, Aramu Muru. This gateway has long been regarded by the local people as a “gateway to the lands of the gods” and it is located between Puno and the Bolivian Border.

This is a place of power and you will spend some time here connecting to Aramu Muru’s amazing energy.

MOLLOKO CHULLPAS

Picture
If time permits, you will visit the Molloko Chullpas, located on the slopes of a hill just three kilometres from the town of Accra. This visit will depend completely on how long we spend at the other two sites above.

The Molloko Chullpas are from pre-Inca times and dates back from 800 to 1400 AD. This settlement was possibly built by Lupaka culture, although it should be mentioned that there is influence of the Inca culture, especially in funerary structures that were possibly built during the Inca settlement in the area, between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.  This was a sacred initiation site.
Lunch and dinner is for your own account.

Overnight at 3* Taypikala Lago Hotel, Chucuito on a Bed & Buffet Breakfast basis

DAY 13 - MONDAY 19 DECEMBER 2016
SILLUSTANI

Picture
This is the last site that you will visit together as a group. You leave the hotel after breakfast and travel off the beaten track along a scenic route, to visit one of the archaeological gems of the Altiplano, Sillustani. It is located on a peninsula next to Lake Umayu.  Sillustani was built around XIII century and is one of the most amazing places within this territory. This place of power is not only recognised for its beauty, but also for its great significance and considerable importance by the Kolla people, a civilization that occupied the area before the Inca domination. They preserved the sacred character of this site as a ceremonial memorial centre.

Later the Incas took this site and built more towers and Chullpas and increased the number of monuments of their own making, which they left behind as evidence of their presence in this region. These Chullpas were the resting places of the important people of that time.

Afterwards you return to your hotel for lunch (for your own account). Once lunch is over there is a closing ceremony at the hotel. You will have the rest of the afternoon at leisure.

In the evening you join Linda for your farewell dinner, included in the tour price.
